HOW TO MINIMIZE DAMAGE IN SHRIMP FARMING DURING STORM SEASON

9:10 06/10/2025

Vietnam is entering one of the most complex periods of the year in terms of weather. Recently, powerful storms such as Bualoi and Matmo, reaching levels 10–11, have struck the Central and Northern regions, causing prolonged heavy rainfall and severely affecting livelihoods and production activities.

As shrimp farmers face increasing challenges from floods and storms, electrical safety must be treated as a top priority. Following proper electrical safety measures not only helps protect farmers’ lives but also minimizes damage and electrical hazards during farm operations.

Use Standardized and Certified Electrical Equipment

“Prevention is better than cure.” The most effective way to prevent electric shock risks is by using electrical devices with clear origins and verified safety certifications.

Some commonly used electrical devices in shrimp ponds include:

-Water pumps: Support water exchange, maintain stable water levels, and remove waste, creating a clean and healthy environment for shrimp growth.

-Aerators: Supply dissolved oxygen to the water, improving shrimp health and growth rates.

-Automatic feeders: Help farmers feed shrimp with accurate quantities as preset, ensuring even feeding and reducing waste.

-Automated control systems: Act as the central hub for managing devices such as pumps, aerators, and feeders. Farmers can remotely switch them on/off and monitor the entire operation via the Tomota IoT application.

All equipment should be waterproof, rust-resistant, and regularly maintained to detect potential faults early and prevent electrical hazards during the rainy season.

Install Residual Current Circuit Breakers (RCCB)

Another important safety measure is installing RCCBs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers). These devices automatically cut off the power supply when leakage or irregular current is detected, protecting farmers from electric shocks and ensuring safety across the entire electrical system around the pond.

Regularly Inspect and Maintain Electrical Systems

Before, during, and after storm season, farmers should thoroughly inspect their electrical systems to prevent avoidable risks:

-Check connections, wiring, panels, and RCCBs.

-Examine insulation layers on wires, plugs, and sockets to ensure waterproofing.

-Confirm that all devices are functioning properly with no signs of burning, exposure, or corrosion.

-Routine maintenance ensures stable and safe operation, reducing unexpected damage during extreme weather events.

Proactively Respond to Natural Disasters with the Tomota IoT Management System

The Tomota IoT Control Cabinet is a specialized automation solution designed for shrimp farms, helping streamline pond management and operation. Under harsh weather conditions, automated control not only reduces labor risks but also enhances safety for both farmers and shrimp throughout the farming cycle. Acting as the central hub for all electrical devices in the pond, the Tomota IoT Cabinet allows farmers to easily manage everything through the Tomota App with just a few simple taps.

Three Flexible Control Modes of Tomota IoT

To help farmers stay proactive in all situations, Tomota IoT offers three flexible control modes:

-Manual control at the cabinet: Operate devices directly via the control buttons on the Tomota IoT cabinet.

-Remote control via smartphone: Monitor and control pond devices anytime, anywhere through the Tomota App.
-Automatic scheduling: Set up custom operation schedules for devices (aerators, feeders, pumps, etc.) to optimize time and labor.

With these multi-mode control options, farmers can manage their ponds safely even during stormy conditions - minimizing electrical hazards, ensuring personal safety, and maintaining consistent pond operation.

Conclusion

With the above guidelines, farmers can take proactive steps to protect their ponds and ensure workplace safety throughout the storm season. Together with Tomota, Vietnamese shrimp farmers can confidently adapt to weather challenges - operating more efficiently, safely, and sustainably every season.
